Lake Lure is an exceptional seasonal destination for rowers. For a number of years Rumbling Bald Resort has hosted several collegiate rowing teams who return each year to take advantage of our mild climate and calm waters.

About the Lake

Located in the foothills of Western North Carolina, Lake Lure is approximately 720 acres with about twenty-one miles of shoreline. It is a man made lake, formed in 1927 by a dam on the Rocky Broad River flowing east of Asheville North Carolina. The lake consists of two narrow stretches of water which intersect in the middle in the rough shape of an "X". North to South, from the beach at Rumbling Bald Resort, the lake measures 5 statute miles. East to West, the lake measures approximately 4 miles. The entire lake is surrounded by beautiful vacation homes and tree lined mountains which minimize effects from winds. The lake tends to be calm and free of waves. Most of the lake is hidden from area roads. Access to lake is highly regulated making it an ideal location for serious rowing programs.
